What's Next for Nicolas Cage?

Cage's performance as Dracula is certainly the highlight of Universal's new movie, Renfield. However, now we're asking, what's next for Nicolas Cage? Cage has captivated audiences for decades with his extravagant and often manic performances. He recently got a lot of attention for playing an exaggerated version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Even more recently he played Dracula in a more comedic rendition of the story focusing on Dracula's servant, Renfield. The movie was disliked by critics and very much underperformed at the box office.  It's a shame really because I thought the movie was a lot of fun and Cage really put his all into the performance (as he always does). If you watched Renfield, you may be wondering what movies Cage will be in next. So, here are five upcoming movies starring non other than Nicolas Freaking Cage.

Sympathy for the Devil
Cage's next film is about a taxi driver who gets forced to drive around a mysterious passenger at gunpoint. It's been described as a thriller, mystery, psychological horror movie. Cage plays the mysterious passenger and Joel Kinnaman (The Suicide Squad) will be playing the driver. Being the type of movie that it is, it seems that it might give Cage a chance to bring us one of his cageist performances yet. It was filmed in Las Vegas and is set to release on July 28, 2023. Also, fun fact, it is the first feature film in Nevada history to be shot on an LED stage

The Retirement Plan
Nicolas Cage plays a retired beach bum living in the Cayman Islands, his estranged daughter reunites with him because she's gotten caught up in a criminal enterprise and needs his help. They reunite but it isn't long before they are tracked down by a crime boss and his lieutenant, Bobo who is played by Ron Pearlman (Hellboy).  The movie is described as an action comedy and should be releasing sometime this year. Cage actually accepted the role in this movie because of the close friendship he formed with Pearlman after they met in Season of the Witch. Apparently, Cage accepted the role as an opportunity for the two of them to hangout. It also hasn't been easy behind the scenes as Cage's mother died during shooting. Hopefully Cage can still bring us his signature performance despite the hardships.

Dream Scenario
This one is a comedy horror film produced by Ari Aster (Hereditary). The movie was originally set to have Aster direct and had Adam Sandler in the starring role. However, the production company was impressed with the writer, Kristoffer Borgli's, recent movie, Sick of Myself, and decided to let him direct. They chose Cage to replace Sandler and Cage happily accepted. He's already said before, that Ari Aster was the director that he most wanted to work with. The movie is about a below average professor who becomes a celebrity overnight by appearing in everyone's dreams. Cage stars alongside Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim Vs the World) and Tim Meadows (Mean Girls). A collaboration between Aster and Cage is exciting because they both have such strange and unique styles. It will be interesting to see what happens when everything comes together for this one next year.

Arcadian
Arcadian (2024), originally titled Sand and Stones, is a post apocalyptic horror/thriller starring the one and only Nicolas Cage. He plays a father of twin sons played by Jaeden Martell (It) and Maxwell Jenkins (Lost in Space), who try to survive at a remote farmhouse. Ferocious creatures hunt and kill when the sun goes down and a mistake made by one of the sons leaves the family open for an attack. The writer of the film is Cage's agent, manager, and producing partner; and this is his second film after 2018's Braven. This movie kind of gives me Quiet Place vibes but I hope it will be able to set itself apart from movies like that. It also seems like Cage might be playing a character that's a bit more serious here so hopefully they still release the Cage on this one, at least a little bit.

Longlegs
Longlegs (2024) is a horror/thriller about FBI agent Lee Harker who is assigned to an unsolved serial killer case revealing evidence of the occult. Harker finds out a personal connection to the killer and must stop him before he strikes again. Now, this synopsis does sound a bit basic but I was excited to know that Cage would be playing the killer and the FBI agent would be played by Maika Monroe (It Follows). Cage described the movie as a "twisted Pinocchio" where he plays a "possessed Geppetto" who's hearing voices and making dolls. It sounds like a really interesting role for Cage and I'm sure he'll absolutely kill it. He'll probably kill a lot in this movie actually but it's Nicolas Cage so we're not mad about it. Overall, it looks like Cage fans have a lot to look forward to this year and next so be on the lookout for more updates on these movies in the future.
